Reef Aquariums are a popular way to introduce people to the wonderful world of marine life. They are also very easy to set up and keep thriving, once the basics are known. There are many different types of Reef Aquariums to choose from and there are some important factors that one should consider before making their purchase. These include: Choosing the Right Tank

There is no single “right” size for a Reef Aquariums, however, there are some basic general sizes that most hobbyists agree are best for beginners. For instance, 20G (Tall) and 30G (Long); A taller tank allows more space for fish, invertebrates, and plants to grow and thrive while a shorter tank can be used for small plants or only a few fish.

Depending on the type of tank one is planning to buy, there may be additional equipment that they need. For example, if they are planning to use sand in the tank, there are some special tools that are required. Gravel siphons, for instance, sift through the sand and will make it easier to drain water for water changes or remove leftover food and poop from the substrate.

Other equipment includes algae scrub brushes, which are a good tool to have on hand to get rid of those pesky algae that will grow everywhere in the tank.

The water in a reef aquarium should be as clean as possible. This is a challenge for some aquarists, however, it is not impossible to keep the water quality at a healthy level.

One way to help with this is by using a RODI filter system which will remove impurities such as chlorine and sulfur from the water. This filtered freshwater should then be the source of the top-off and water change regime, along with synthetic reef salt added to it at appropriate levels. In September 2021, Orphek introduced new Atlantik iCon Reef Aquarium LED Lighting, with intelligent connectivity.
