Enterprise Session Border Controller; a Network Element Deployed to Protect SIP based VoIP networks
An enterprise session border controller (E-SBC) is a device that regulates and protects data streams as they traverse the boundaries of a network. It is specifically designed to address unique security, reliability, and interoperability problems that can occur when real-time communications sessions across network borders. Enterprise session border controllers control and secure VoIP (voice over IP) and other forms of communication, such as video conferencing, unified communications, and messaging. SBCs also control, measure, and protect VoIP sessions as they pass through a network, from one edge of the network to the other.
A session border controller is a special-purpose device that protects and regulates IP
communications flows. They are deployed at network borders to control IP
communications sessions. SBCs act as a router between the network and the
carrier service ensuring that all calls are secure and have the highest quality
of service possible. An SBC can also serve as an additional firewall that can
identify incoming threats. Enterprise
Session Border Controller is a network function that secures voice-over IP (VoIP) infrastructures while providing interworking between
incompatible signaling messages and media flows (sessions) from end devices or
application servers.
Session
border controllers provide a variety of functions for their host networks, such
as security, network connectivity, quality of service, and regulatory and media
services management. It also serve as a gateway to and from the public Internet
and is an essential component of cloud-based unified communications solutions.
It is often used to secure SIP based voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), also
known as IP telephony, organizations. Enterprise session border controller
(E-SBC) acts as a segregation point between Voice over IP (VoIP) network of businesses
and the session initiation protocol (SIP) trunk of the service provider.
Session
border controllers play a vital role in the VoIP system and are vital for a
well-functioning IP communication system. Without SBCs, enterprises or organizations
might experience security issues and communication interruptions rather than
save a fortune in the long term. Session border controller lets enterprise interconnect
SIP trunks, on-premise enterprise telephony, Contact Center as a Service
(CCaaS), Unified communications as a service (UCaaS), and any other SIP service
with security, reliability, quality, and scalability that enterprises can
deploy in their own networks. Thus, there is an increase in demand for SBCs in
enterprises.
In
February 2023, Microsoft partnered with selected Session Border Controllers
(SBC) vendors to certify that their SBCs work with Direct Routing. A
certification covers comprehensive validation of the SBC for the Azure direct
routing.
